Elements of Fiction Escape Room Activity

Introduce your students to the elements of fiction, short stories, and literature with this fun and engaging Elements of Fiction Breakout Activity. This resource covers plot, conflict, setting, character and characterization, point-of-view, and theme.

This download includes teacher directions, student directions, and all of the printable resources necessary to hold an escape activity in your classroom. It is an ideal way to introduce a short story activity.

BEFORE THE ESCAPE

This resource comes with a pre and post-assessment (same test) so that you can gauge your students’ understanding.

DURING THE ESCAPE

Students will complete seven different elements of fiction tasks. Most students should be able to complete the escape room in one 55-minute class period. The first task is an informational close read where students answer multiple-choice questions. From there, tasks 2-6 cover plot, setting, character and characterization, point-of-view, and theme. The final task is deciphering a coded message.

AFTER THE ESCAPE

Conclude the escape activity by reviewing the correct answers with your students and assigning the post-assessment to see what students learned.
