ELA Vocabulary Test Prep Escape Room Challenge

Help your students learn and remember critical academic vocabulary words frequently used on high-stakes tests with this ELA Test Prep Vocabulary Escape Room Activity.

BEFORE THE ESCAPE

Introduce the 40 words includes in this Escape Room to your students with a word sort. This will allow them to think about their knowledge of the words.

DURING THE ESCAPE

Students will complete four different test prep, vocabulary-focused ELA tasks that rely on matching words to definitions, sorting words, unscrambling words, and demonstrating the meaning of a word. Throughout these four tasks, students will apply words in different ways to actively learn the words.

AFTER THE ESCAPE

Conclude the escape activity with a quick write reflection and word association activity. These post activities will help reinforce the content of the ELA Vocab Test Prep break-out activity.

Nonfiction Reading Escape Room

Make test-prep fun! Help prepare your students for high-stakes standardized tests with this ELA Test Prep Nonfiction Reading Escape Room Activity.

This download includes teacher directions, student directions, and all of the printable resources necessary to hold an escape activity in your classroom. There are two different nonfiction passages included in this resource: one is used during the escape room and the other is for after the escape room as a follow-up activity.

BEFORE THE ESCAPE

Give students a copy of the nonfiction reading passage before beginning the escape room. Give them time to read and annotate the passage.

DURING THE ESCAPE

Students will complete four different test prep, nonfiction reading-focused ELA tasks that rely on answering questions that mirror state testing questions, finding appropriate evidence for specific questions, determining the meaning of more challenging words, and writing an objective summary. Students should be able to complete the escape room in one 55-minute class period.

AFTER THE ESCAPE

Conclude the escape activity by reviewing the correct answers with your students. The multiple-choice question answer key comes with answer rationales so that you can explain to your students why the correct answers are correct.

After students complete the escape room challenge for the first nonfiction reading passage, there is a second nonfiction reading passage and a six-question test prep practice test to help ensure that students are better prepared for state testing.

Listening Skills Test Prep Escape Room

Make test-prep fun! Help prepare your students for high-stakes standardized tests with this ELA Test Prep Listening Skills Escape Room Activity.

This download includes teacher directions, student directions, a professionally-recorded audio file, and all of the printable resources necessary to hold an escape activity in your classroom. This escape room activity includes one nonfiction passage about smartphone addiction that is professionally-recorded. Students listen to the audio file and then complete the six escape room challenges.

BEFORE THE ESCAPE

Play the audio file for the students. For students who have IEPs, or for extra differentiation, I’ve also included a text version of the file.

DURING THE ESCAPE

Students will complete six different test prep, listening skills tasks that rely on answering questions that mirror state testing questions, finding appropriate evidence for specific questions, determining the meaning of more challenging words, and looking at additional information. This resource includes a link to three different Google Slides resources: a slide deck of Rhetorical Analysis Task Cards, and two slide decks of answer documents.

There are two sets of task cards each included in this resource. The first set includes 8 task cards. This set is designed to quickly have students rhetorically analyze a text using the SOAPStone method. The second set includes 32 task cards that are ideal for analyzing a text with more depth.

ABOUT THE PRINT FORMAT

This hands-on ELA test prep review activity includes four stations (colon, semicolon, the hyphen, and parallel structure), and will take approximately 45-60 minutes.

Each station includes the following items:

A content reference page for students to review crucial information

4 task cards with test-based questions

This resource also includes a student recording sheet and an answer key.

ABOUT THE DIGITAL FORMAT

There are four mini-review activities in this resource:

1. The Semicolon

2. The Colon

3. The Hyphen

4. Parallel Structure

Each activity should take about 15-20 minutes for students to complete. These digital ELA review activities are ideal for a brief review, a do-now activity, or an introduction to grammar. Students will be able to use the informational sheet for future reference.

• A one-page review handout
• 4 standards-based, test prep questions
• Answers for the four questions.

About the Questions:

1. Select the sentence with the correct usage.

2. Select two sentences from a passage with incorrect usage.

3. Use the mentor sentence to write your own.

4. Fix the incorrect sentence.
